Writer's picture: J. LoganJ. Logan

As a photographer, I constantly find myself searching for the perfect camera that strikes a balance between creativity and practicality. Recently, I stumbled upon the Diana Instant Square, and let me tell you, it has completely changed my photography game—especially in the studio. Utilizing the hot shoe adapter for off-camera flash has allowed me to unleash my creativity like never before. Join me as I dive into why this charming little instant camera deserves a spot in your photography toolkit.

What is the Diana Instant Square?

The Lomography Diana Instant Square is a versatile instant camera that combines vintage aesthetics with modern instant film. It features a square format, allowing users to capture 1:1 images. Key specs include a 75mm lens (38mm equivalent), and a built-in flash for low-light situations. The camera uses Fujifilm Instax Square film, providing high-quality instant prints. The camera uses a zone focus system, runs on 4 AA batteries, and has a tripod mount. Additionally, it offers multiple exposure capabilities and a variety of other lenses in the Diana F+ series, making it ideal for artistic photography enthusiasts.

The Intrigue of Instant Photography

Instant photography has always held a special allure for me. There's something magical about capturing a moment and watching it develop right before your eyes. The Diana Instant Square embraces this nostalgia while combining functionality. It takes me back to simpler times while allowing me to experiment with my craft in ways I never imagined.

With its chic design and user-friendly features, the Diana Instant Square has quickly become my go-to option when I want to have some fun while shooting in the studio. The ability to play around with off camera flash only enhances the experience.

Off-Camera Flash: A Game Changer

One of the standout features that make the Diana Instant Square so versatile in the studio is its hot shoe adapter. Historically, off-camera flash photography was generally reserved for more sophisticated setups, not often with instant photography cameras. However, with this little adapter, it’s easier than ever to get creative with light.

Using the hot shoe allows me to position my external flash wherever I need it. Whether I'm casting dramatic shadows, highlighting specific features, or experimenting with different lighting angles, the possibilities seem endless. I can confidently say that off-camera flash has opened doors to entirely new dimensions in my photography.

Simplifying the Studio Setup

Setting up a studio can sometimes feel daunting, but not with the Diana Instant Square. Its lightweight build makes it super easy to move around, and the manual features means I can control the output of the film. As someone who appreciates the importance of workflow, I find this incredibly refreshing.

Furthermore, I can seamlessly adjust my exposure settings and experiment with various shooting modes that cater to the specific artistic vision I have for each project. This adaptability is essential when working in a studio environment, where every detail counts.

In my last session I shot with colored gels on my flashes to get some dramatic looks. The Diana has a fixed shutter of 1/100 in Normal mode but also has a bulb mode. Since I was indoors I stuck with f11 which is the maximum aperture. Others available for f19, f32, and pinhole. Instax film is ISO 800. I set my flash power to my desired setting and metered with my digital camera as to minimize wasting shots.

Building My Creative Portfolio

Using the Diana Instant Square has not just elevated my photography skills; it has also transformed my portfolio. The instant film provides unique textures and qualities that traditional methods can sometimes lack. Each image becomes a piece of art rather than just a photograph, thanks to the distinct color palettes and soft focus that the camera delivers.

The added charm of instant photographs is their unpredictability. Every shot holds a surprise, which keeps me constantly engaged throughout the entire process. This spontaneity often led me down paths I never would have explored with a conventional setup.

Sharing the Experience

Let's not forget one of the most delightful aspects of using the Diana Instant Square in the studio—sharing the excitement with others. When I shoot with this camera, I find myself surrounded by friends and fellow photographers who can't help but gather around to witness the instant magic unfold.

Whether it's a collaborative photoshoot or a casual get-together, everyone loves watching those moments come to life on film. The charismatic design and effortless operating system draw people in and create a fun, light-hearted atmosphere.

Final Thoughts

In a world filled with advanced technology, the charm of the Diana Instant Square lies in its ability to transport us back to the roots of photography. Its seamless integration with off-camera flash via the hot shoe adapter makes it a must-have for studio enthusiasts like myself.

The camera allows for unparalleled artistic freedom while simplifying the setup process—truly a win-win situation. It has become a key component in my photography kit, and I can hardly envision a studio session without it.

If you're keen on experiencing instant photography in a whole new light, I wholeheartedly recommend giving the Diana Instant Square a try. You'll find yourself unable to get enough of its quirky charm, and who knows? It might just become a staple in your own creative routine.
