Fujifilm X-Pro2 : Here are 10 reasons why it is one of the best cameras for enthusiast photographers:

Writer's picture: J. LoganJ. Logan

When I first got into mirrorless cameras I opted for the X-T1 SLR style bodies since I was used to shooting with Canon DSLRs. I even use to have the Canon M series cameras also. Since I didn't shoot much film I didn't have an affinity for rangefinder style cameras. But the Youtube community praised the XE/Xpro series so I had to try it.

I initially got the X-E3 and although a fantastic camera, it wasn't a pro body and felt a bit too small to be my backup body. So I tried the Xpro2 and never looked back. The value of the Xpro2 has remained high on the used market and there is plenty of reasons why.

1. Classic Design

The X-Pro2 features a retro design reminiscent of traditional film cameras, appealing to photographers who appreciate classic aesthetics. Its based around a rangefinder style with manual dials and plenty of buttons. It resembles and draws inspiration from Leica M cameras.

2. Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder

It offers a unique hybrid viewfinder that combines both optical and electronic viewfinder options, providing versatility and allowing photographers to choose the best option for their shooting style. For those that are used to DSLRs or classic rangefinders you can still achieve that experience when you want it.

3. Exceptional Image Quality

With its 24.3-megapixel X-Trans CMOS III sensor and X-Processor Pro image processing engine, the X-Pro2 delivers stunning image quality with excellent color reproduction and low-light performance.

Why 24 megapixels is enough

A 24-megapixel resolution is considered a sweet spot for mirrorless cameras because it offers a balanced combination of image quality, file size, and low-light performance. With 24 megapixels, photographers can capture highly detailed images suitable for most types of photography, including landscapes, portraits, and even printing at large sizes. The resolution provides sufficient detail for professional work, while avoiding the excessively large file sizes that higher megapixel counts can produce, which can slow down workflows and fill storage quickly.

Furthermore, 24-megapixel sensors typically strike a good balance between resolution and light sensitivity. Larger pixels (compared to higher-resolution sensors) allow for better light-gathering capability, which leads to improved performance in low-light conditions. This can result in cleaner images with less noise, especially in high-ISO settings, making these cameras versatile for various lighting scenarios.

Additionally, the processing power needed for 24-megapixel images is moderate, which helps keep burst shooting speeds and autofocus performance fast and efficient. This resolution is also easier on lenses, as most quality lenses can resolve 24 megapixels effectively without revealing optical imperfections that might become apparent at higher resolutions. This sweet spot suits both hobbyists and professionals seeking a balance between quality, performance, and practicality.

4. Film Simulation Modes

Fujifilm is known for its film simulation modes, which replicate the look and feel of classic film stocks. The X-Pro2 includes a range of film simulation modes such as Classic Chrome, Acros, and Provia, allowing photographers to achieve distinct looks without extensive post-processing.

5. Compact and Lightweight

Despite its advanced features, the X-Pro2 is compact and lightweight, making it ideal for travel and street photography. Its also not too compact that it can't handle larger lenses. If you're comparing it to DSLRs of old, its lightweight. Using the optical viewfinder saves battery life but when using the EVF be sure to have extra batteries for all day shooting.

6. Durable Build Quality

The X-Pro2 features a robust magnesium alloy body that is weather-sealed, ensuring durability and protection against the elements. Pair with weather sealed f2 primes for a great travel ready setup.

7. Intuitive Controls

The camera's external dials and controls provide quick and easy access to essential settings, allowing photographers to make adjustments on the fly without diving into menus. The Xpro2 is definitely a hands on experience.

8. Advanced Autofocus System

The X-Pro2 boasts a fast and accurate autofocus system with 273 phase-detection points, ensuring sharp and precise focus even in challenging shooting conditions.

9. Customizable Functionality

Enthusiast photographers can customize the X-Pro2 to suit their individual preferences, with customizable buttons, menu options, and even customizable film simulation presets. You can truly make this camera your own. The X-Pro3 removed the D-pad and adding a reverse tilt screen which is a bold yet controversial move. I personally love to use buttons and makes everything you want to change at your fingertips.

10. Wide Range of Compatible Lenses

Fujifilm offers a diverse lineup of high-quality lenses compatible with the X-Pro2, including prime lenses, zoom lenses, and specialty lenses, allowing photographers to expand their creative possibilities. My favorite lenses to is the Fuji 23mm f2, 27mm 2.8, and 50mm f2.

My Final Thoughts

The Fujifilm X-Pro2 has many features and qualities that are desirable to most photographers. Its a camera that makes you want to pick it up. My X-T2 is my work truck and my X-Pro2 is my sports car. Its just more fun to look at and take around town. They both can take you to your destination but one will do it in style.
