If you’re looking for a restaurant in Chicago that feels like more than just a place to grab dinner, Kitchen + Kocktails by Kevin Kelley is worth checking out. Located in River North, the restaurant combines Southern soul food with an upscale, energetic atmosphere.

The first thing that caught my attention was the decor. The space has a stylish, modern look that feels designed for a night out. There’s a lot happening visually, from the elegant dining areas to the lively bar, and the overall atmosphere has a fun, grown-up energy. It’s the kind of restaurant where you want to take your time, enjoy the surroundings, and of course, take a few photos.

Then there’s the food. Kitchen + Kocktails takes familiar soul food favorites and gives them an elevated presentation. The menu includes dishes like fried chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, Caribbean jerk lamb chops, Southern fried catfish, braised short ribs, and lobster and waffles.

For me, that's what makes the restaurant interesting. The food still has the comfort and familiarity of traditional Southern cooking, but the presentation and variety make it feel like a special occasion. The sides are just as important, with classics such as macaroni and cheese and collard greens rounding out the meal.

Kitchen + Kocktails is also very much about the experience. Between the stylish decor, cocktails, music, and generous soul food menu, it feels like a place built for celebrations, date nights, or simply enjoying a good meal with friends.

If you love soul food but also appreciate great atmosphere and presentation, Kitchen + Kocktails is a Chicago restaurant worth putting on your list.
