Is the Fujifilm X-M5 a good successor to my X70? :: My general thoughts

Updated: Mar 20

The Fujifilm X-M5 could serve as a strong replacement for my beloved Fuji X70, especially given that Fujifilm has not introduced a direct successor in the form of an X80. The X70 gained popularity among enthusiasts and travel photographers for its compact, fixed-lens design and high-quality APS-C sensor. Although it lacks some modern features, the X70's simplicity and portability made it ideal for casual and street photography. The X-M5, however, builds on the strengths of the older X-M1 by adding advancements that make it a compelling upgrade.

Why compare the X-M5 against the X70?

Your first thought is why compare these two different camera? One has a fixed lens and the other interchangeable. For me its about being my EDC camera (every day carry). The small size is compelling and there are no current offerings in the Fuji range of X series cameras that are as small. The X-M5 is even smaller than the X100VI and X-E4.

You can see in this video the size comparison of the X-M5, X70, and X-E4.

The X-M5 features a 26.1-megapixel X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, a significant improvement over the X70’s 16.3-megapixel sensor. This increase in resolution enhances image detail and clarity, making it ideal for photographers looking to print their images or crop in without losing quality. The X-M5’s sensor also performs better in low-light conditions, maintaining Fujifilm's strong color science and film simulations that many photographers love. These simulations, combined with improved resolution, allow users to produce beautiful JPEGs straight out of the camera, perfect for photographers who prefer minimal post-processing.

In terms of handling, the X-M5 retains a compact, portable design that remains suitable for travel and street photography. While it does have a different form factor compared to the pocket-sized X70, it’s still a very manageable, lightweight camera. The XM5 also features enhanced ergonomics, with a more pronounced grip and customizable controls. This provides a slight but welcome improvement over the X70, which had a flatter, less pronounced grip. I often use the Fuji X70's leather half case to beef it up.

Another advantage of the X-M5 is its upgraded autofocus system. Fujifilm's latest phase-detection autofocus, found in the X-M5, is much faster and more reliable than the older system in the X70. With improved face and eye detection, the X-M5 is better suited to capture fast-moving subjects, making it versatile for a broader range of shooting scenarios, including action and candid photography. The responsive autofocus also complements the 20 frames-per-second burst shooting mode (using an electronic shutter), giving photographers the speed they need to capture fleeting moments — a feature absent from the X70.

X-M5 is an option as a vlog camera

My current vlog camera is the Fujifilm X-S10. It reliable and has similar features of the X-M5. In reality, both the X70 and X-S10 would get replaced by the X-M5. One camera to do it all?

The X-M5 offers more advanced video capabilities. The X-M5 supports 4K video recording, a feature many modern photographers and content creators appreciate. This makes the X-M5 a more versatile tool, allowing users to capture high-quality video along with stills, which aligns with the growing trend toward hybrid shooting among enthusiast photographers. The flippy screen is not ideal for photography but I can live with it since it will handle double duty.

The X-M5 benefits from Fujifilm’s modern film simulations and updated processing engines, which help make the camera intuitive and enjoyable to use. Fujifilm's commitment to retro styling paired with cutting-edge technology remains, providing photographers with a tactile shooting experience while enjoying the benefits of digital advancements.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the X-M5 offers significant upgrades in image quality, autofocus, ergonomics, and video capabilities, while maintaining the charm and usability that made the X70 one of my favorite cameras, especially for every day carry. Although it may not have the X70’s exact form factor, the X-M5’s enhancements and size make it a worth considering as my successor. As of the time of writing this only the black and silver is available for pre-order but I will hold out to try a black one in store and make a final decision at some point.

I still have my X70. Bought it second hand in pristine condition. I love the images coming out of it. But I wish it had the same battery as my X-T30 and X-S10. I am willing to let go of it just for that reason and I am very intrigued with the X-M5.

I agree. Having separate batteries is a bit of a pain. An X80 that is slightly larger with that battery and I'd love it. The XM5's screen is the biggest let down from being a true spiritual successor to the X70. Ultimately I just went with an X-T10 and 18mm f2 / 27mm f2.8 to be my X70 replacement. Ticks the boxes for battery and screen for me.

I have both and the x70 (w/o half-case) still feels more "compact" to hold. It's slimmer and lighter. But I do like all the added features of the m5. Still on the fence whether to keep or sell it. And FYI, I do also have the x-e4 which is all around better (for photography), especially with the EVF.

Thanks for your comment. How does the Fuji XE4 feel with the lack of grip?

Great article Jason and it answered a lot of the questions I was asking myself like do I buy the X70 that I had once sold off on eBay again or her the new XM5? I didn’t realize until after going through many travel photos that some of the best photos taken were with the X70.

The X70 is truly a great gem of a camera. The one I have now is my 3rd one. First 2 were broken so I really love it. If the XM5 had a tilt screen I might be more inclined but still holding on to my X70 for now. Keeping my eyes open for the XE5 also.
